MELISSA Joan Hart's re-cent breakup taught the young star that love doesn't always have a happy ending.

"Everything I loved about love in the movies I later found out isn't right, except for Roman Holiday," says the star of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

"At the end Gregory Peck walks away from Audrey Hepburn and there's something so heartbreaking and true about that."

The 23-year-old actress still hopes she and ex-beau James Fields, the actor she was dating until earlier this year, may have a happily-ever-after to their four-year love story.

"If my boyfriend and I get back together, then it's really meant to be," she says. "I'm not a selfish person, but right now I want to do things for myself."

Melissa, who is about to hit the big screen in Next To You, didn't let her broken heart get in the way of starting a romance with costar Adrien Grenier. "We had a little 'thing' in the beginning," she admits, "But that happened more because of the characters we were playing. Adrian is wonderful and so sexy, and I love and respect him, but we would never be together. We're friends now though ... that set was a soap opera, a total Peyton Place."

And despite her goody-goody image, the young beauty is planning on shaking up her fans. "My next step will be to take things further, maybe do something people don't even want to see me in," she says. "There's a heroin movie I'd love to do, in which I'd play a nice girl who happens to be addicted. I'd love to play the darker side of a good person."
