Article about Melissa
An article about Melissa appeared in the Dec 99 issue of Australian "Big Hit" magazine, here are the pictures and text of that article:
Who said "I like to be as naked as possible"? Would you believe sweet lil' Melissa Joan Hart?!
Yep, these words (and much, much more!) come straight from the Witchy one herself. In fact, Mel has caused a huge controversy with a series of risque photoshoots and revealing interviews she did to promote her new movie Drive Me Crazy, she discussed sex, drinking, and other dodgy subjects, and posed in skimpy outfits (well, a bedsheet!) for the US mags Maxim, Bikini and Movieline.
After seeing them, Michael Silberkleit, boss of Archie Comics, (the empire that owns the Sabrina character), flipped out and demanded an apology, or even a resignation, from Mel. "Melissa Joan Hart can do whatever she wants as Melissa," he snapped. "But as Sabrina, she must adhere to our guidelines. I think Sabrina is a wonderful show, but I wouldn't even want that copy of Maxim in my house."
In a brief statement, Melissa replied, "We have always presented Sabrina as a positive role model for children. It has never been my intention to do anything that would compromise the character I love so much." Added Mel's mum, Paula: "What we're doing is just showing people that she is a grown-up." very grown up indeed, Mrs Hart!
THE AUSSIE ADVENTURE
Hot on the heels of a special episode trip to Rome, Sabrina headed for our shores. The movie-length Sabrina (the show has officially lost its Teenage Witch tag in the US), sees the gal and her witchy friend Gwen (Tara Charendorff) on an adventure at the Great Barrier Reef, where she studies marine biology...and, well, boys! Sabrina meets a handsome "mermen" called Barnaby (played by ex-Neighbours dude Scott Michaelson) and his sister Fin (Lindsay Sloane, who, confusingly, plays Valerie on the regular show). The mermaid colony is getting ill because of environmental pollution, so Sabrina steps in to help them out. The special will air here early next year.
Could there be any more witchy news? Well...yes!
Sabrina, the Animated Series has just begun in the US and is the prequel to Sabrina. The new show
features the voice of 13-year-old Emily Hart, younger sister of
you-know-who, as Sabrina. Em has appeared with Mel on both Clarissa Explains
It All and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch and plans to be a marine biologist
when she grows up (we're sensing a pattern here). Big sis also has a part of
the animated series, lending her voice to both of Sabrina's Aunts, Hilda and
Zelda, who are teenagers in the mortal form but centuries-old witches in
"the other realm".
So far the animated series isn't scheduled to be shown in Australia.
